Expectations and Goals

Through my time in education developing my skills further, I have found a strong interest within 3D and working with 3Ds Max, my main goal is to work within 3D, I currently don't know specifically as I feel I am not strong in an area to pursue a focus for my future as of yet. after analysing job prepositions that are available, I have noticed that they are looking for very strong knowledge and skills within 3Ds Max. To get my ideal goal of working in a large games studio, I would need to put in hours to develop my skill set to another level. I would need to set myself targets of pieces to be made in terms of variety, which could aid me in finding what my ultimate specific role would be within the industry. I feel there would be a need to follow tutorials about creating new models and what 3Ds Max has within the program. I also feel researching into new techniques would help my production rate if I knew the program on a more solid level.
I feel that it is possible for me to gain the skills and knowledge though research and development into my own skill set. I would need to put the time and effort in to get to what the industry is requiring of those looking for a job.

Portfolios

After researching into a variety of portfolios, I discovered that the best ones are laid out clearly and cleanly. They feature only the best work with information about the poly count and also feature the unwraps to display along side the model. It has also been noted that it is advised that you feature traditional work to display that you have an understanding for anatomy, colour, light and that you have creativity.
If you can create digital art work the leans towards the company you are intending to work for, such as creating vehicles for a racing game or by matching their art style, it can help show you have an interest in what they do.
Displaying a variety of technical skills can show that you are adaptable and can skilled in many areas, but will most likely want you to specialise in one specific field.

I developed my own portfolio after researching into other portfolios. I wanted to create a clear and clean looking portfolio where nothing distracts from the work on screen. I also added annotation to explain the creations.
As well as this, I added links to my professional social media accounts on the page for people to visit.

Jobs in industry

We were tasked to look into various job roles and see what would be required of us to be able to land the job that we are looking at.

For portfolios, it advises to add information about the brief, time spent, polycount, wireframes and textures as well as the finished article.

I will need to work on hi-res sculpting, baking textures and material/shader setup in realtime render engine in order to meet their requirements. Even at an entry level, the knowledge within the programs is still quite high, I would need to research and experiment within the programs to bring my skill set up to another level to be able to match what is required for industry.

Cloud Imperium
Prop Artist

With this published ad, it explains that the applicant would be required to work from concepts provided, consistent and high quality models and work co-operatively with other, is something I feel could follow out. Creating assets for a game I don't know and being part of some form of management is something I would need to develop.

With the requirements, I feel I have good knowledge within 3DS Max and Photoshop but the others would require time in another job to gain required skill set for this roles.

Gameloft
Environment artist

The required skills for this job role are quite broad and just ask for proven artistic knowledge in the from of modelling, mapping, textures and world building. In terms of programs, they just ask for knowledge in 3D packages, texturing packages and game engines like unity. Something I feel I have skills in to acquire such a job for. As well as this they ask for good understanding of colour and composition, ability to receive feedback and react upon it and have a passion for games development. All of which, I feel confident in, but I still know my skills would need to be developed further.

Rockstar
Junior vehicle artist

This job role is very specific in what is required of the applicant compared to the others. It doesn't ask for past experience, but wants applicants to be extensively experienced in 3Ds Max and Photoshop. This is something I could only amend by using these programs more to gain the high level knowledge for this role. But the specifics of this role ask for the applicants to comprehensive knowledge for vehicles such as Cars, Trucks & Vans, Motorbikes, Helicopters, Planes, Military, and Boats. I would need to be a specialist to acquire this job role and through guest lectures, I have understood the importance of this to get a high end job role.
